Squanto.
Arguably the most significant figure responsible for the survival of the pilgrims is a Native American named Squanto. Squanto had previously visited England before the pilgrims arrival on the Mayflower and spoke fluent English. He was able to communicate and talk to the pilgrims helping them with several issues. He certainly saved them from starvation by showing them how to tend the land teaching them different farming techniques. He made sure the pilgrims could be self sufficient surviving off of what nature offered. He also helped the pilgrims form peace treaties with the Native Americans who otherwise might of attacked the pilgrims. Without the help of Squanto the pilgrims most likely would not have survived and we wouldn't celebrate one of my favorite holidays, Thanksgiving.
